TIROEN IRISH SETTERS

PUPPY NEWS 2010

Sunday 27th June - This is the last blog as the puppies have already gone or are about to go to their new homes. We have already had reports of the puppies taking on their new nick names of ‘NO!’  but on the whole all has gone smoothly and the new owners are being sorted out by their new additions to their families!

Thank you so much everyone for following the blog and for all the lovely comments that you have made about our babies – it started out as a means of letting the new owners see what was going on to see first few weeks that they are with us, but it turned into quite a diary . . .

The puppies progress can now be followed on their own pages.

We are ending the blog with a  montage of our favourite photos, some you will have seen and some are new — enjoy!!!

Saturday 12th June - The puppies have been having their own World Cup!!! Full of mischief, they don’t miss a trick and have to investigate everything.

Sunday 6th June - My how time flies! ~They are really looking like mini Irish setters now. They are lulling their new owners into a false sense of security as often appear sleepy and chilled out when they pop by for a visit, and as if by magic once they have gone, run around like loons!!!

Tuesday 1st June - The puppies have been getting up to lots of mischief and are really playing with each other now - nothing is sacred and visitors go in armed with a towel to protect their toes!! They are having fun running up and down the ramp and when it isn’t wet are happy to go out side and explore out in the patio.

Thursday 27th May - Oh Bless!!! They are such fun - they are getting very playful and everything has to be stalked and pounced on and then chewed - especially if it is an ear, leg or tail!! They are trotting happily outside to eat and are even getting the hang of going out to pee and poo - well ok, maybe not all the time but they are getting then hang of at least going on the paper and outside is a bonus.

We also have a special photo with Great Great Grandmother Breagha who has just turned 13 !

Monday 24th May - We’ve had a busy weekend moving the puppies downstairs. All went smoothly and they didn’t bat an eyelid even with the washing machine on full spin!! They’ve had a few ventures outside but are still quite happy exploring their new home and all the boxes we’ve put out for them to hide in and chew. They are loving their food and the dilemma has been that we don’t over feed them as we are not sure that they will stop when they are full! The cuddly toys are taking a beating with the favourite at the moment being a reindeer as you will see.

Wednesday 19th May - What time wasters they are - so much for getting the ironing done!! They are getting to used to the routine of life outside the box and already are mainly going out of the whelping box which has the vet bed in, to go and pee and poo on the newspaper.  Grateful thanks must go to first of all our team of puppy sitters who come in and feed the puppies their lunch and also the families at St George's Prep School where I teach, as they are keeping us well supplied with newspapers!! The puppies are still in the upstairs room; however, we will move them to the downstairs dog room in another week or so to introduce them to more of life.

Saturday 15th May - The Puppies are out of the box!!!  It  wasn’t the stampede that you might think as most were asleep - however it was Lou Lou who made the first big steps -some just rolled out!! However, they are all happily trotting around and content to feed out of the box and make their own way back in when they want to sleep although some find other furry friends to curl up with - check out the photos. We have started playing the noise CD and they have slept through the lot even when it is on loud! They are happily munching their way through their Royal Canin and don’t leave much at all for Freya to clean up.

Tuesday 11th May - Well the puppies are starting to think outside of the box . . . We have had little faces peering over the edge of the box.  Feeding times is getting fun and you can guarantee that Adele will be the first to the bowls; Vikki will ensconce herself inside one of the bowls to prevent anyone else getting a look in and Pierre will check out each bowl at least twice to check if there is anything left!!!

Saturday 8th May - Thank you all for your lovely comments - I know owners always think their puppies are gorgeous - however ours are beautiful and the pictures don’t do them justice!! Trying to get them look half way awake after a big feed was nigh impossible!

They are starting to feed better now and loving the mince as you will see from the photos. They are still sleeping a lot and just love cuddling up to each other.

Thursday 6th May - Well the eyes are now open—however at this stage there isn’t the focus yet but the puppies are getting more aware of their surroundings and are getting more inquisitive. They are running a little behind due to arriving earlier than they should have done but they are all well and growing!!!! They have all been ‘litter box’ named (not going to be their final pet names!) after the team who helped bring them into the world and the photos introduce them all to you. Already you can detect the different characters that they are developing. We have been commenting though at how laid back and content they all are -  long may that continue!!!!

Sunday 2nd May - The puppies are definitely getting more mobile around the whelping box. They have just had their first go at some Royal Canin porridge and had a pretty good go at it  - well the state that they got themselves into seems to speak for itself!! Then Freya gets to clean up the mess and give them a good top up feed – well there has to be a bonus for putting up with the little ‘rug rats’. She is being a good mummy and very tolerant.

Thursday 29th April - All well and growing daily. They are very contented and are not far off from opening their eyes—there are little slits just starting to appear in the corners of their eyes. We cut their nails a few days ago and they were all good and didn’t make a fuss.

They are also trying to get up on their feet and getting rather mobile around the whelping box –that is except when they’ve just eaten and their tummies are to ‘rotund’ to lift off the floor!!!

Sunday 25th April - Yeh ! We finally have the Website up and running again so hope you enjoy it.

Puppies are doing well and putting on weight. Freya has settled down after the rather traumatic start and is being a lovely mummy to her babies. She is feeding all of them and they are getting used to being ‘topped’ and ‘tailed’ and cleaned up on a regular basis!

It won’t be long now before their eyes will start to open and their facial features are getting more defined with little whiskers growing.

Saturday 17th April - Freya has turned the corner and has become a mum—as of yet not much milk so we are still bottle feeding the puppies but she has become very protective of them and is doing an excellent job of cleaning them—nearly too much as they may need to learn to swim soon!!

Friday 16th April - It turned out to be a rather traumatic day for all concerned—Freya went very flat and the decision was made to do a caesarean—due to the anaesthetic and Freya not making much effort the puppies took some time to get going and for a while we weren’t sure that any would make it—However 9 healthy puppies later ..... And a rather sorry for herself Freya, we made it home.

Text Box: Nigel and I look carefully into choosing sires for our puppies; temperament is extremely important to us and all health tests, hip scores are done prior to making a decision about a mating.
Tiroen Puppies are reared within our home. They are whelped in a quiet spare room and once old enough are moved downstairs to an area where we can let them outside when it is warm enough. Mum is wormed on a regular basis from day 40 of her pregnancy and the puppies are wormed at 2 and 5 weeks old and again before leaving us for their new homes. We play a ‘noise’ CD from early on and introduce as many real sounds to the puppies whilst they are with us. Once they are old enough we encourage friends to come along to help us get them used to all sorts of voices, hats and people; helping them to become sociable.
(well actually is gives the puppies somebody new to chew on!!)
They are all vet checked after birth and again before they leave for their new homes.
